Penetrating fluid for pesky nut's & bolts

Post by fmblizz »

Saw this on the internet. Have not tried it as of yet but definitely plan to. Very big difference between brand products and the home made ATF/acetone mix. Has anyone experimented with this?? This shows the home made brew twice as good as Kroil. Could be the difference between loose & break.

Over at the Jaguar, Bentley and RR forums, the ATF and acetone is what everyone uses.
It's been brought up numerous times.

I have tried WD-40, Liquid Wrench & most recently PB Blaster without much success even applying multiple times and waiting overnight. I mixed up a batch of the ATF/Acetone concoction, and it had little to no effect on automotive leaf-spring shackle nuts that had been frozen in place for 45 years. I was finally able to loosen the nuts with the aid of a pipe wrench and breaker bar.

There are some tests and comparisons of various penetrating oils at the Project Farm Youtube site.

The problem with acetone/ ATF is it tends to separate. I have been using Sili Kroil for years with excellent success:

I go through a couple gallons a decade. It's saved my arse many times. Sometimes it takes repeated applications/ soakings over a few days, slowly working the offending fastener, but it WILL come loose. The silicone keeps things lubed after the penetrant penetrates. I have freed up piston rings and freed up frozen wiper pivots, hinges, etc. with this stuff.
