Reducing Motor Noise

First time taking my Standard A top works apart to clean them. Everything has been replaced and relubed.

What tips, tricks, and adjustments can be made to reduce the noise?

It sounds like your governor shaft gear is very worn. Getting a new, or better, shaft may help. It can also help a bit to experiment with the position of the governor shaft by moving it laterally with regard to the gear that drives it. Trial & error in finding the "sweet spot" sometimes helps.

Can you at least locate what causes the noise? Jerry suspects the governor - and with good reasons - but those three flat gears with flat teeth on top of the machine look intentionally engineered as noise-makers to my eyes... :?
