WANTED: replacement motor or Governor or repair

Post by OldRestorer »

I finished the restoratio on my Perfection but amazingly when I put it all back together and was adjusting it the gear on the governor slipped due to being worn down and broke off the tip of the shaft. Of course this is right after re-springing it and having the governor redone by Ron. I would love to just get the governor fixed and keep the motor original but I don't see that happening. Maybe someone has a replacement that would work?

So I would like one of these 3:

1. repair the Governor
2. Replace the Governor
3. Get a replacement motor that will fit the original mounts.

Id like to get it finished before paying for the nickel plating.

Kirk

Hi Kirk,

It seems to me that you should be able to swap out the shaft with one from another governor of the same size.

If you get a new axis, make sure they also provide you with the right two bearings at both ends, for the axis pins must be matched with the bearings. If you reuse the old ones maybe they don't fit on the end pins either they go too loose on them and the governor will vibrate.

Considering the amount of wear on the gear, I would definitely replace it.

Probably not possible to be that lucky, but it really looks like an Edison governor shaft would work. Edison shafts vary in length of course so you'd need to get one that at least comes very close to yours. Otherwise, the gear pitch looks to be the same.

Here is one that's too long. Do you have the ability to cut it down to make what you need? If the outside diameter of the gear, and the number of teeth are the same, you can be pretty much be assured it's the same gear. Of course, pin diameter is also important.

(The same seller has one the correct length, but the gear appears to be smaller.)
