Question regarding Edison Jazz Records

Fletcher Henderson's two sides for Edison were "Stomp Your Feet" and "Linger Awhile;" both issued with selections by different artists on the reverse. Don't forget Charles A. Matson's Creole Serenaders,another African-American jazz band who also recorded but two sides for Edison. Here's one:

According to Walter C. Allen's definitive Henderson discography, entitled "Hendersonia...a Bio-Discography," (publ. by the author, 1973), p. 81, it's "Shake Your Feet," not "Stomp Your Feet." Both "Linger Awhile" and "Shake Your Feet" were recorded in NYC on 11/30/23. "Shake Your Feet" was from Ziegfeld Follies of 1923. The question of personnel is a matter of some conjecture, but there was apparently a mix of Henderson regulars and others used on this date. Allen is highly laudatory of Edison's recording quality, calling it "the finest fidelity of the acoustic era."

Yes, it's an incredible gold mine of carefully researched info, that AFAIK isn't available in one place anywhere else. I was fortunate enough to have been able to obtain my copy from Allen's widow many years ago. It's the kind of book you could sit and read for hours on end, and then start all over at the beginning and do it again!

One I got a couple months or so ago that I got from Tom Hawthorne's last record auction was by B.A.Rolfe's band that I really like is "Buffalo Rhythm",backed with "Rocky Mountain Blues".This is one of the last acoustic DD's.A GREAT record!! edisonplayer

Another hot jazz band that has not been mentioned yet is the "Original Memphis Five". Sadly, Edison did not issue too many sides by that group, but those recordings were really, really good!

There is a possibility that OMF recorded as Broadway Dance Orchestra for Edison. Has "Original Memphis Five" ever appeared on the label or did they only record under a pseudonym for Edison?

According to Alan Sutton's research in the Edison cash books, Broadway Dance Orch. was usually Vincent Lopez's Orch.
