The earliest Operas also had gunmetal-finish mandrels, that soon changed to oxidized.

Forgot about that. I also have an Opera with gun metal mandrel. I would have thought the gun metal mandrels were generally a bit later and the earliest ones were oxidized. Mine is #10 and totally original. I'm surprised they ran with gunmetal as high as the 1600s.
