Those 1911-1914 DDs certainly have a very good clear sound, and I think the best sounding surfaces of all DDs. I have a few of them and they really have amazing sound.

While part of me hates to throw away anything entering its second century, I am wondering if it may not be time to put them out of their misery.

Is there anything that can be used to treat the surface of such discs to reduce noise that will not harm turntable felt and the stylus?

I have quite a few Diamond Discs. clean them well, don't worry about it. If they are that bad , you might try some WD-40 , early Diamond Discs ehh..poor quality control for a great music player.
