Hello all,

I know this sounds like an extremely random request, but I could really use some detailed pictures of the inside of the door on a barrel-front Herzog cylinder cabinet (#710), specifically how the metal shelf supports are attached to the door and the cabinet. I just, for the life of me, can't figure out how these shelves are supposed to be attached to the inside of the door, and think a picture would go a long way towards figuring this out.... That said, when I get this cabinet done, I'll post some pictures and tell the story behind it!

There were two versions of shelf bracing in the 710. The earlier, seldom seen version used a wooden brace above the right edge of each shelf, attached to the inside of the door. I can supply photos of this arrangement if you need them. A small hole centered about six inches above each shelf means you need the metal rod supports. I have a photo of that too. Which do you need?

Without question, I have the seldom-seen arrangement. There is a triangular cut above each shelf on the right side, probably for the wooden brace that you mention. See pictures here:

Tim hasn't gotten back to me yet, but you are telling me what I have suspected, that my cabinet uses another arrangement. Detailed pictures, wood type, and dimensions of this wood shelf support would be immensely appreciated.

How sturdy are those shelves? They seem awfully thin...

The shelves appear to be remarkably sturdy, with the support and the routered slot in the door that also helps support them. The combined weight of the cylinders is not as bad as a comparable number of discs might be, or so one might imagine.

Well, congratulations on owning a rare cabinet! And now the bad news...

The shelves & peg arrangement in the early model differ from those of the later. The replica shelves Tim sells are - - naturally - - for the later, more common model! I have included photos of the early style shelves and braces for your viewing pleasure. You can purchase birch plywood at any local Lowes or Home Depot and make your own without too much trouble.

Vital statistics: The shelf and brace extend 10.5" from the door surface at the hinge side. The brace is made from oak, ⅜" stock, and rounded on the top. The shallow/narrow area of the brace is 1 ⅜" tall. The deep/wide area of the brace is 3 ⅜" tall.

Thank you so much for the pictures. Now for the first question. Do the oak supports have a routered cut into them to accommodate the birch shelves? I can't tell.

Yes, about ⅔ of the oak brace's thickness (let's see...that would make it ¼" )is routed so most of the brace is on top of the shelf, while about ⅛" hangs down flush with the bottom surface of the shelf - - or perhaps just a hair below. The shelf is glued to the bottom of the brace - - no nails/screws are used.

Just re-read this, and it sounds confusing to me... The routed area removes the inner lower corner of the brace. The brace is not beneath the shelf at all. In other words, the brace DOES NOT have a slot routed into it; just an "inner corner" rather than an "outer corner." Make sense?

If I may- you are talking about a simple rabbet joint-see fig. 11 about halfway down the page. It is not the first joint I would consider for that particular application-but It appears it worked well enough!

BTW, congrats Garret on a beautiful cabinet. Good luck with the restoration.
