According to the Ikea website the Expedit can take a maximum load of only 13 kg's! I assume that's 13 kg per cubicle, and not 13 kg's for the entire cabinet. The bigggest Expedit (20 cubicles) is 150 x 150 cm, which means each cubicle is about 35x35 cm. That means you can fit about 100 78's in one cubicle. A standard 78 weighs roughly 200 grams, so that's 20 kg per cubicle or 400 kg's for the entire cabinet. That's well above the maximum load recommended by Ikea.

Actually the biggest Expedit has 25 cubicles, each 33cm x 33cm x 39cm deep (inside measurement).
I get around 150 shellac discs, or 7 albums, to each cubicle. In fact, 15 of the cubicles in mine which hold 10" records, have also got about 20 discs sitting flat on top of the upright discs
I also use the top surface of the unit for storage, and there's 16 portable gramophones & electric record players sitting up there too, so I'm sure I've got way more weight in mine than Ikeas recommendation.
Mine sits in a redundant hallway next to the dining room (now gramophone room), and I actually stand on the lower shelves with my back against the wall, when I want to reach a machine close to the ceiling

I think I've had the unit about 3 years or so, and the shelves show no signs of bowing, and the whole unit is as sturdy as the day I put it together. Being plasterboard lined walls, I didnt think using the brackets that came with the unit would offer any extra support whatsoever, and naturally, the position of the shelves & carcase dont line up with the wall studs either, so I left it completely free standing.
When I assembled it however, I did use a good quality PVA glue on every join, so it's a lot more solid than I think it would be without the glue.
It's surprizing just how strong the Expedit is, especially considering the shelves are only about 15mm thick laminated chipboard, but I think because the horizontal shelves are all one continuous plank running between the outer upright ends (with small vertical cubicle dividers), and only a 33cm spans in each cubicle, the 15mm board is quite adequate to support the weight of 150-170 discs without the board distorting in any way.
I'd have no hesitations getting another 25 cubicle Expedit for the rest of my 78s & for my vinyl records, if I could only find somewhere to put it lol.

My hallway is only 90cm wide, which makes it impossible to photograph my storage front on, so this was the best I could do.
One good thing about having my records in a narrow hallway is that I dont have to worry about trying to make it look pretty front on with colour co-ordinated sleeves etc so it looks nice in a living area.

Have to store the bulk of my collection in a 10' x 10' x 10' storage unit. It is heated with humidity control. Has 6 - 4' x 4' homemade shelves each capable of holding about 1600 records and about 25 milk crates plus a shelf built at about 6'6" all around. Last, there are about 35 homemade wooden boxes each capable of holding about 120 records. Here is a snapshot:

Just added a collection of little over 800 records last weekend. It's getting pretty crowded in there.
