Thank you for posting this link. I heard about it, too. Add 1,000 to the price of the record, That's what I paid for my house back in 1990. Wow, that sure is something. I watched the video of the recording, and it was very good, but not $37,100 worth. I can watch the video, and save myself all that money.

Numerically speaking, how many "holy grails" of sound recording are there? As many as there are fragments of the "True Cross" lurking about?

You'd have to ask Mark Twain about relics such as that. In fact, my idea of a holy grail would be a recording of Mark Twain. I read that Bettini made a recording of Twain, but later took it to France where it was destroyed during WW1. Of all public figures living since the invention of the phonograph, why oh why, didn't Twain make commercial recordings?

Yes that is a nice record, and I have never seen an actual Paramount label in my life. However, my finances would never allow me to pay that much for a record. I look at it that I could have many machines and records for that amount. Also, I wonder if the resale is even worth it, could take a loss, but may make a gain, you never know.

I was just thinking the same thing...A housefull of nice machines and plenty of recordings to play...
But if that recording was my "White Whale" and I was "Ahab"...i could easily understand the reasoning for
wanting to desperately aquire it.

It could be viewed as an investment. There's deep pocket collectors all over the globe that seek records like this. Plus I'm sure Tefteller could sell a few nuggets from his existing collection to finance such a thing as this record.

How much do you suppose Tommy Johnson got for cutting that record? Maybe $5?

More than that I would think.

Those Paramount artists might get something like 30 bucks a side. Depending on how popular they were.
