Please identify cabinet

Anyone know what this cabinet was for? I thought it was a sheet music cabinet
but there are needle cups in the door.

A nice above average mahogany record cabinet. Generic and good for any horn or hornless mahogany disc machine.

Hi,
This cabinet and its oak twin can be found in (once again) Fabrizio & Pauls "Antique Phonograph Accessories & Contraptions" pages 189 and 190. I cannot stress enough how much "knowledge" that anyone who buys these books will accumulate when you own the complete set of the eight produced by those two gentlemen. It is a very reasonable investment that helps you become an informed collector complete with price guidance. I believe George Paul still has a number of complete sets of his books available. There is a thread on availability within the past year. John

I believe the cabinet was made by the Herzog company. The Herzog Art Furniture Company was a major manufacturer of high-quality phonograph and record cabinets in the early 1900s. My cabinet looks pretty similar to yours and houses records. I obtained the beautiful cabinet and Victor 6 from Raphael Coles of Musical Treasures of Miami. I hope this helps!

As John noted, we showed this same cabinet in oak and in mahogany in Antique Phonograph Accessories & Contraptions on pages 189 and 190 respectively. Unfortunately, we were not able to identify the maker. Radman, I'd be obliged if you'd share your source for identifying these cabinets as Herzog; I never found them in a Herzog catalog nor advertisement.

As a philosophical aside, I really don't want to be an annoying book hawker! I have occasionally shared information/scans from our books when questions were asked that are answerable through a familiarity with our books. I do this less often now because I fear I'll come across as an irritating, self-serving book peddler. But the information is there for those who want it, and I thank John and the many others on this forum who have encouraged other collectors to invest in knowledge.

George, I was told that the provenance that came with cabinet when originally obtained identified it as a Herzog. I wish I had a catalogue that illustrated the record cabinet, but unfortunately I don't.
