Page Maker as well as other Adobe software was created for MacIntosh OS. When they adapted it for Windows (actually DOS with tons of autoexec.bat files) they made it self-contained so they could keep much of their Mac code. I suspected this when I initially dragged the files over and, yes, it worked.

Well, this has turned into a rather wonderful thread!

Thanks to everyone who understands what's going on with computer software (I'm not one of them), and for offering suggestions! :D

You've made Rene a very happy boy, and when Rene's happy, everybody's happy... ;)

Best to all,

George P.

Indeed, I've been working on the December issue this afternoon and I can't begin to express what a relief it is to be working in Pagemaker, just like old times. It's working like a dream, knock wood.

Again, I can't thank you enough, John. You really saved me on this one. I'm glad this thread was posted or I would never have learned this amazing solution to a truly miserable headache.

And VintageTech, I do have a rarely-used laptop with XP. It has Pagemaker and a lot of my other old files. In theory I could have continued to do the magazine on there. In practice, doing desktop publishing on a laptop is a huge PITA. I very quickly gave up any hope of that working out. But it's my fallback for several things that I can no longer do on this computer, but which are mostly of minor importance.

I have also copied the relevant Pagemaker files onto two remote drives that are stored away from the computer, so I hope that this will be a good safety net.
