NEW ADDITIONS!!

Post by flashpanblue »

Hello,
I recently added a batch of cylinder records, an early Columbia Q, and a Vic II to my collection. Nothing rare or unusual about these items but I wanted to tell you how I got the stuff home. I had the items stored at a friends house on the West Coast of Vancouver Island B.C. Canada. My wife and I had to fly out for family business and I decided that I would try and bring most of it back in our suitcases. I managed to pack 90 plus wax cylinders in two carry on suitcases. The rest had to go in check on suitcases. The Vic II case and motor and the Q went in one, 35 Blue Amberols, the Q horn and the Vic II back bracket, tone arm, reproducer and turn table went in another. Although I carefully bubble wrapped everything I was still rather worried that something might be damaged. I even cut up small pieces of bubble wrap and put it into every single wax cylinder box to take up the extra space and stop the cylinders from moving back and forth. The two suitcases of cylinders records did cause some concern at the airport security check in, so I had to do some explaining. My wife thinks I am a little crazy but heck I love this stuff!!

You're brave... No way I would have put wax cylinders in "Check-in" airplane bags unless they were "carry-ons"...

Two years ago, I went up to New York to visit friends and family, and while I was there I picked up a sweet Edison Standard Model "D" in near mint condition which only came with a Model "C" Reproducer. It was missing the original horn, but came with another one. It was also missing the original crane and Model "H" Reproducer. It was in such nice shape and I got it for $275.00 which I though was a deal for such a nice machine.

At any rate, I did not want to ship it back to Florida, so I packed the machine in a 8.5" x 11" Office Depot Paper box, and attempted to bring in onto the plane and go through security. Security had me take off the top of the box, and they looked it over and I explained to them what it was...and that was about it, then they let me go on my way with it. When I got onto the plane with it, I put it in the Overhead compartment (You know how they are always overstuffed tight)...and luckily, The box just fit. As the plane was taking off and landing, I was worried that it might slam against the compartment door and fall out, but it was all AOK. I got it home in perfect condition, but I would not hesitate to do it again with a machine of the same size. Everything worked out great. The final part of the story is that after I got the machine home safe and sound, I left it in its box, and put it in a corner in my living room. I have not even looked at it since...and that was two years ago. I'm still hunting around for an original standard 10 panel horn, and original crane, and Model "H' Reproducer to complete the project. Until then, It remains on the backburner....like many other projects.....lol... I can't wait to finish it out someday...even if I have to go with a repro Horn and crane...

Question: Has anyone here ever ordered a Repro Edison Standard Morning Glory Horn from Wyatt's???!??? If so, Please tell if you liked it or not. Much Thanks.

:o)

Pete,

Did you fly Air Canada - the same airline where passengers video taped their employees throwing luggage off of the plane to the tarmac below?

That would have been a night mare trying to convince their management the true value of a suitcase full of now broken 100 yr old cylinders.

The OP said the cylinders were in the carry-on luggage.

Wow, you are brave. I'd be scared silly to pack those wax cylinders on a plane. The packing was ingenious.

I don't normally agree with our non-collecting spouses but in your case she may be correct. ;) Jerry Blais

Hi All,
We never fly Air Canada anymore! We always fly WestJet, much better service. I forgot to mention in my original post the I boxed up the Vic II horn and mailed it home.
There is actually a back story to this whole thing. I bought the Vic II and Blue Amberols 1 ½ years ago from Darrell Lehman of Seattle Washington, also a Forum member. He is a prolific EBay cylinder seller. He held on to the Vic II for me.
Last December I bought the 90 plus cylinders from Jerry Blais in Oregon, another Forum member. He held onto them for me.
Two months ago I bought the Columbia Q from a fellow who goes by the name " The Wood GUY" He lives in Olympia Washington and sells machines through the local craigslist. I had him send the Q to Darrell in Seattle.
Another Collector and Forum member Russ Ridley from Victoria B.C. won an Amberola 1-B from a mid-west auction and had it shipped to Jerry's house. Russ drove down to pick his machine up and at the same time picked up my cylinders from Jerry and then stopped in at Darrell's in Seattle to grab the rest my machines etc. This is a bit of a long story but a very good example of the benefits of belonging to a great Forum like this. Without this networking the whole thing would not be possible!
