Help identifying parts

Post by Torjazzer »

This Frankenphone came into my possession (long story) and it has some pieces that might have come from a British machine. Can anyone inform me of their origin?
The horn is probably from a cylinder machine as it bares a hook for a crane.

The horn support / Back Bracket looks as if it is from an Oxford Tapered Arm Phonograph. Though the name is "Oxford" it is USA made.

It could also be a lower end Zonophone, which had a similar back bracket. The reproducer is not correct for either machine.

It would be best to show the whole machine in order to get a proper opinion of all the parts... ;). I should have added....the bracket appears to be Oxford not Zonophone.

From what I can see, the back bracket was used on a late lower end Zonophone and Oxford. The Zonophone version would have the Zonophone decal, and the Oxford would not. These were made from about 1909-12. I have one of these machines and it has the Victor style crank, escutcheon, ans speed control. I'm not sure if these late Zonophones/Oxfords were made by Victor or not, or in part.

There is no decal at all on the machine. The case itself looks as if one or two panels have been replaced. The crank appears too long and there is a tell-tale dark ring about half way up the shaft where it might have been held on a different machine. As for the sound, not bad at all. It has a warm quality and tone of something like an orthophonic-type reproducer. I've searched the internet and cannot find even the smallest reference to a Trutone reproducer. I'll post more pics tomorrow.

I think that Truetone has to do with Western Auto.

I see now what you were describing. The case appears to be a "put together" of some sorts. The horn is a cut down Hawthorn & Sheble for a cylinder machine.
