Victor Talking Machine Factory World Map - Is it Original?

Post by Garret »

Gents,

This map may be coming up for sale soon, and I've thought about throwing a bid in for it. However, were these maps ever reprinted? Did they have an edge that could have possibly been trimmed?

They were indeed reprinted on a limited basis by the Eldridge Johnson Museum about 12-15 years ago.

George,

Thank you very much for the information! If I may ask; is there any way to tell an original from a reprint?

Best,

Garret

I'd want to see the item in person. There should be a noticeable difference between 15 year-old paper and 90 year-old paper. I would expect the colors on an original to have been toned down after years of exposure to light. Of course, modern paper can be aged to look frighteningly authentic.

The frame appears to be new, and the mat certainly looks new. The mat and frame are not properly proportioned for the map inside. Perhaps the map can be removed from the frame; that should decide the matter. This could be an old one that was re-matted and re-framed, but it doesn't look old to me. It's really impossible to tell for sure from a single photo.
