Made an Interesting Trade Today!!

Hello,
I made an interesting trade today. All the machines in my collection are pre 1920 so I don't usually consider anything newer. I was contacted by a fellow who restores antique radios. He wanted to get an Amberola 30 and a dozen cylinders to play on it but he didn't want to pay cash for it. He wanted to trade and offered me this 1930 Atwater Kent model 75 Radio and combination Phonograph. He completely restored the mechanics and refinished the cabinet. Both the radio and phonograph play great! As I had a few spare Amberola 30's sitting around( Who doesn't)I went for the deal. I am very pleased with it. To my surprised my wife likes it so much that she wants me to move it into the Living room and buy some nice 1930/1940 78's to play on it!!

Nice set Pete, looks like a pretty good trade to me.

It's funny, my wife's favorite piece is also an old radio/phonograph of mine.
She'd be fine if I sold every other machine before that one.

Pete, Great machine - very clean! Welcome to my favorite period of recorded sound. The phonograph was made by RCA Victor for AK. You'll see the same in the RCA combinations. I would stick electric recordings from 1925 to 1935 for this machine and save the 1940s records for a lighter weight pick up and stylus.

That might be the Atwater Kent "Golden Voice" model- I have the demonstration disc for it. Some day I'll have to make a video of it

One thing i enjoy very much about this hobby is the diversity of equipment over the years, and the unique "feel" associated with the different periods. I'm prone to bury myself in the 1890s/19-oughts, but this Atwater-Kent evokes the late 20s/early 30s with its lacquered cabinet, dark finished metal, and of course Victor scrolls spinning on the turntable. Warm tones of early electronics... It's all good.

Pete, it is a beautiful example and I'd say you made an excellent trade. I have a nice AK radio from the same era, but sans the phonograph. Needless to say, I'd much prefer one like yours.

I've always been fond of Atwater Kent...

I have a couple of model 20 battery sets, and am looking for a model 84 Cathedral model

To find an A-K "radio-gram" would be beyond my fondest dreams...
