I know there have been at least a couple interesting threads on pre-electric lighting here before but mainly focused in indoor lighting.
From 1847 to 1985 Prague was lit by gas lamps, 9,000 of them by 1940. Now they are back, at least 700 of them in the most historic parts of the city. Normally they are lit remotely but during the Christmas season many are lit by the old fashioned lamp lighters in period costume.
A few years ago when I first saw the new gas lamps replacing their terribly crude mercury vapor "yard light" bulbs that had been installed in the old fixtures I was delighted but I thought they were more cleverly disguised electric replacements. The look is awesome.

Bethlehem, PA has some gas street lamps, and open flame gas lights in the Central Moravian Church (1805). The Academy of Music in Philadelphia (1857) has gas lamps on the front façade.

Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and the lights are perfect... wish they were installed when I was there several years ago...

You probably saw some of these too Curt. These mercury vapor lights were what replaced the original gas lighting from about 1985 - 2002 and are still in use in many places.
