Progress on the VV 4-7

Post by colmike1 »

Back in June, Ken Brekke generously gave me a Victor Orthophonic Victrola VV 4-7 and delivered it the Union. It has been languishing in my dining room until the last few weeks, when I finally had a break in my schedule. A couple of weeks ago, I cleaned all the hard, dry grease off the motor and gave it a light lube (will still need to clean and repack the springs) and replaced the O-rings & bearings on the reproducer. Today, thanks to the aftermath of a wicked ice storm, I was able to work on some of the case issues. I re-glued all the loose veneer, tightened all the loose hinge screws and gave it it's first coat of orange oil. Looking better, but still a way to go.

Mike,
Great progress on the 4-7!!! I am glad that you will be able to bring it back to life. It is a great sounding machine.
Keep us all posted on the progress.

This is a small orthophonic that I would love to have. Once, I restored a 4-3, but this machine would be a nice upgrade. Yours is looking quite nice, good work and congratulations!

Thanks! Have ordered a few bits & bobs for it (reproducer flange, turntable felt, etc) but it is coming along nicely. Will post more pics as I proceed

Case has been stained and will be shellacked by the end of the day.

Finally had time to finish up this machine. It is still missing the needle cup and the reproducer needs to be replaced (pot metal is disintegrating). It sounds ok, but rattles on the louder passages. It is as far as I am going to be able to take it (other projects piling up and estate sale season is in full swing). Will be offering it soon for sale at the cost of my parts. Will post the price as soon as I tally all my receipts and hope it goes to a young collector who will take it to the next level.

Looks very good! Is that another machine in the background of the video? What model is that one?

That is an Edison Schubert that I purchased from Ralph Pugh. Scarce machine, but needs cosmetics. It will be my winter project (among others). I am just now finishing up on my Pre-Dog Victor Type M. I think I have the columns the right color now! So many phonos to rescue....so little time!
