It's up to 94 bids. Looks like a war is going on. That's mighty dear for this machine.

Re: What the heck?
It is definitely mahogany not walnut. This one has a brass Orthophonic reproducer but all else is a common Victor Credenza. You can see in the bid history that the underbidder kept bidding about every 30 seconds or so in small increments until he/she achieved the high bid for only about a minute when the high bidder bid one increment higher and the underbidder apparently gave up at the current price.

Re: What the heck?
Something very, very wrong here. I think I actually restored that machine for this owner or a previous one in the late 90s. I'd like to believe it's the same machine and that my fine work is why it is going so high, then I come back down to reality. If it's the machine I think it is it was pretty much a basket case and a really fun challenge.
I think the nibbling bid underbidder is a sport bidder and we'll be seeing this one come up for sale again soon. I've had these Einstein types ruin Mercedes and Porsche auctions on eBay for me before. There's always an outside chance the underbidder is in cahoots with the seller, too, but that's an accusation that I hesitate to make, especially since eBay started scrambling all bidder IDs so you can't research them and see what they are up to anymore. Back then, I found that my "sport bidders" had a similar car for sale in worse condition, so they bid mine up through the stratosphere. I was also able to tie several IDs to the same guy selling the same year and model in the case of the Mercedes.
For me, the auction says that freight shipping is free- seller could get burned badly by eBay on that one because he talks about using the least expensive route for the buyer in the listing. At the price, though, shipping should be included, LOL!
If I could get anything close to that for my Berliner I'd be happy!

I was gonna say shill bidding. Has all the hall marks of it, but who knows? I agree with you we will in all likelihood see it relisted. But at least it was a transitory source of amusement.

Re: What the heck?
For posterity: NOTE TO BIDDERS - NEVER place a high proxy bid on any item unless it is less than 10 seconds to the end of the "auction", or this type of thing will definitely happen... Check the bid history and note that some "bidder" (lunatic) kept tapping up the bid until he found out what the first bidder's proxy bid was - typical of either one or two things. Either this "bidder" is a shill bidder or he is an OCD moron determined to find the max proxy bid and make the original bidder pay through the nose...
All that I can say is I hope the seller gets stuck with a $2,800 shipping bill...
