Home model A early "new style" question

Post by Dustie89 »

Hi

Looking for some help. I have a Edison model A regular banner decal Home with the serial number of H92592.

I found a banner front "new style" model A Home with the red banner on the front in a local antique store. The decal looks original. Oddly it has a 2/4 min adjustment and mandrel put on it with a H reproducer. The serial number is H104169. I thought about buying it, but thought the motor and bedplate may be from a later model A with the 2/4 min attachment added. Any input would be helpful.

Thanks
Dustin Ellis

Edison offered conversion kits for all models when 4 minute records were introduced in 1908, so finding a machine that was upgraded 100 plus years ago is not uncommon today. The Model D, introduced in 1908, was the first Home that came from the factory with 2 and 4 minute gearing. The parts for the A, B and, I believe, the "suitcase" Home are exactly the same and completely interchangeable. I converted a Home A using parts from a B and everything fit and worked perfectly.
The short answer is that I consider it to be a legitimate period add-on which can be easily reversed and wouldn't have any problem with it.

Hi Dustin.
Your instincts seem to be working well. The last Red Banner new style case I've seen is 70532 - and that is one of two outliers. The main bulk of them seem to end with 52089 (at least on my data sheet). In absence of any other documentation, I'd guess that the case was a replacement.

Martin

I've attached a few pics. Everything looked good. I thought initially the 2/4 min attachment was the upgrade offered later and thought it would be a interesting machine to have, but the serial number on the works appeared to late to me to be the "new style" or some call the "transitional style" banner. So I think I'm skipping on it. Havnt decided yet.

Thanks for the info

Dustin
