Found this unusual machine listed on eBay. Hey George, maybe you could tell me about it?

Gosh, I can't really add anything to the eBay description. We showed one of these in one of our books (I don't remember which book), and as I recall the caption was pretty brief. Sorry!

Hi Paul,

The Penny Toy cylinder phonograph is ours. We wrote the book on "Phonograph Dolls and Toys" and it is described and pictured on page 1-43 in the book. It is a rather rare toy and we have only seen three examples in collections. However, we always believe there are more to be found. We have not found much information on this toy. We know these toys are from the early 1900s, were made in Germany and sold in England for a penny. A nice addition to any collection and does not take up much space. A Gramophone penny toy is found in "Antique Phonographs Gadget, Gizmos & Gimmicks" by Timothy Fabrizio and George Paul. We endorse all the volumes written by these wonderful authors.

Thank you for noting it on e-bay.

I couldn't help myself, so I attempted to find that penny toy in the book Gadgets, Gizmos, and Gimmicks, but no luck. I can't even find one in the master index. I did accidentally find a spring-driven toy (non-functional) cylinder phonograph on page 70 of World of Antique Phonographs. But not the penny toy I'm picturing in my mind. I knew this day would come... ;)

Sorry your day has come sooner than later. Try page 91 of Gadgets, Gizmos & Gimmicks.

This phonograph tin toy was manufactured by Erhard & Söhne, Fein-Metallwaren-Fabrik, founded in 1844, located in Schwäbisch Gmünd near Stuttgart, Germany. See catalogue entry of 1900:
