Portland Talking Machine Co.?

Post by RebeccaAP »

Hi everyone, we acquired an old talking machine manufactured by "The New Concert Talking Machine Co." of Portland, Oregon. I have been unable to find anything about this company. Is the machine perhaps another brand, with a label over it? (see image attached). Does anyone know anything about the company? Thank you!

It would be helpful if we could see photos of the entire machine.

Here are some more pictures. Does anyone know how rare/valuable this machine might be? I've not seen any other reference to machines by this company. Thank you!

I found a reference in a University of Oregon publication from December 1921 about the founding of the company. So far that is all I can find. I'm sure it was like many of the 20s machine companies that popped up all over the country as the patents ran out.

The New Concert Talking Machine
company, with a capital stock of $25,
000 and headquarters in Portland, has
been incorporated by C. M. Hausler.
L E. Hausler and R. W. Hausler.

I also saw announcements of this same type in The Oregon Daily Journal, The Capital Journal of Salem and The Salem Statesman Journal. But nothing else about the machines or anything and after living in Portland for 40+ years I never saw one like it or heard of the company. Attached is a section of the Capital Journal of Salem that shows new corporations in 1921.

Thanks, Dan, that's helpful. Do you think such a machine could be valuable? (how do we determine value?)

I am no expert on value for the off brand machines like this one. But, in my experience the local branded machines have little value to collectors. They are much more interested in the mainline brands such as Edison, Victor, Columbia and a few more. If I were going to guess at a value it would be in the $200 to $250 range for retail. Perhaps others will have ideas too.

My collection consist of mostly off-brand machines - I like them because not many were made (I assume) and there is little to no documentation that goes with them. I value my collection highly. It's easy to find an Edison, Victor, or a Columbia. (kidding)
