Going to Look at 3 Machines Tomorrow-UPDATE

Post by hearsedriver »

Im going to check out old phonographs in a barn tomorrow . Ive got 3 pictures to show and was wondering if anyone can identify the table top phonos? The Edison console is rough but might be worth the $20.00 asking price for parts. How would I know if the reproducer is good? Any way to tell by looking at it? The sller wants $20.00 each for these and, knowing they are rough, Im hoping for some decent parts. Anyway, here are some pictures. Thanks

All of those machines are worth the asking prices. $60 for that group ($20 each) is a steal!

The top one looks like a Columbia 25H or a BN/BNW (one of their later external horn machines). I'm not sure about the middle one (looks like an off brand) and I can't tell about the Edison from the one picture. I'd need to see the cabinet, but I'm sure someone here can identify it.

I thought the top one might be a Columbia but, the 2 holes on the crank side threw me. At least I think the forward hole is a hole?

Maybe that's the one this reproducer was made for!

The two crank holes on the top machine would indicate a non-original motor was swapped in at some point.
Still worth $20 for just the back bracket, if nothing else.

Some Columbia made machines had the combined speed control with the start/stop plunger on the same side as the crank, the first machine pictured looks like that I think. So no switched motor necessarily. For $20 each I would not think twice, the back bracket of the first machine is worth more.

If the BN is too rough to restore, and your looking to part it out, I'd love to have that rear bracket and reproducer.

Back from the Barn

Post by hearsedriver »

So, I just got back from the barn and brought home more than I had anticipated. Wow. That was fun! In addition to the original 3 phonographs that I mentioned, I bought another Columbia table top, record cabinet, 17 Edison cylinders, and a box full of old records. The record cabinet is really nice. It has push buttons that will eject the selected record. Never seen that before. The box of records contains some rare 12" one-sided Victor Records too. The Edison is pretty much trashed but has some good parts. The small Columbia phonograph has a broken piece between tyhe tone arm and bracket. Looks like pot metal. Otherwise, in nice shape. The Columbia BN has been stripped but is pretty complete except for the missing screw on horn. I havent identified the other small tabletop yet.
I wish I had more room because she has a nice Edison C-19 Chippendale for sale. It has been refinished but looks pretty good. The top drawer is completely full of Edison DD records and the bottom drawer is about half full. The gold plating is pretty worn but, the gold medalion is there. She wants $250.00 for it. My house is just completely full or it would have been mine. Anyway, feel free to comment about any of the stuff in the pictures. Thanks

The Edison is/was a C-150 Sheraton, a common machine and precursor to the very similar S-19. It's a good workhorse machine; mine has been my primary Edison player for several years. I doubt yours is worth fixing up, except perhaps as something to learn on.

I like the record cabinet very much!
