My Newest Rescue - Columbia Model 810

Post by OrthoSean »

A couple of weeks ago, someone pointed out an 810 about 100 miles from me on Facebook Marketplace. Since I'm really trying to downsize, I told myself "no, don't even inquire...". I messaged the seller later that day anyway because I have no self control  . It turned out the machine had been purchased new in 1926 by the seller's wife's Grandmother and seems to have seen only light use before being banished to a basement for 60-70 years. I was back and forth over the thing for over a week before the seller messaged me again and made me an offer I couldn't refuse. After a four hour round trip Saturday, we unloaded the thing and muscled it into the house. I'd read and been told these things are heavy, but that's an understatement. I almost didn't think we'd make it, but I'm determined. It's filthy from years of neglect and basement life, but after one going over with GoJo, the potential is quite apparent, this is going to come out nice. I was pleased to get the albums with it also which were full of almost entirely green label Viva Tonal Italian Columbias that the Grandmother bought new. Now the fun of it all begins. And yes, I'm still downsizing, but this one is growing on me, and once MicaMonster rebuilds the reproducer and I get the horn sealed up properly, this is going to be fun to compare with my Cortez and Credenza. A couple of shots after round one of GoJo. What's one more project, right?

The Columbia 810 is a real beauty. When you get a chance to compare it with the sound of the two orthophonic machines I hope you post your review. Congratulations for your insight in buying the 810.

Thanks! Will do. Considering the horn seals are literally falling off and the reproducer desperately needs rebuilding, I was surprised at the volume. I'm hoping to fit one of my Meltrope soundboxes to it later for a better idea. If time allows, I'll begin resealing the horn tonight.

Sad to think this was destined to become a liquor cabinet if I hadn't grabbed it, the owners are moving south and couldn't take it. I've always wanted one of these and they never turn up around here, so everyone came away happy although my back is still killing me

It looks to be a real gem. I cannot wait to hear your reports after the reproducer is rebuilt. Congrats!

That's a beauty, Sean! I look forward to you showing it after you've applied your skills.

I am glad that you prevented another mini-bar conversion. It is nice to have something different. I look forward to your follow up.

I always liked these Viva-Tonal uprights. Congratulations for being able to save this one. The finish looks to be in great condition.
