Records about Prohibition

Post by AmberolaAndy »

I’m interested in collecting records about then current topics like WWI propaganda songs and such. With the 100th anniversary coming up of its passing, recently I’ve been interested in records about prohibition. Either it be songs or vaudeville sketches.

So far I have:

Sahara (We'll Soon Be Dry Like You) - Esther Walker

How Are You Goin' To Wet Your Whistle (When The Whole World Goes Dry) - Billy Murray

Cohen On Prohibition - David Kline

The Moon Shines On The Moonshine &
Everybody Wants A Key To My Cellar - Bert Williams

You Can't Get That Stuff No More - Tampa Red

What are some other records out there dealing with the passing of the 18th amendment? Pro or against?

Thanks.

I've got Simon The Bootlegger by Flotsam and Jetsam which is related to prohibition too

One I'm fond of. Revenue men or revenue officers were terms for prohibition enforcers who busted moonshine operations, etc.

One of my favorites is Blue Amberol 3961 - "It's the Smart Little Feller" by Maurice Burkhart.

You can listen to a copy here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaPJ71zQZiQ

I forget who was responsible, but "Every Day Will Be Sunday When the Town Goes Dry."

Not a song, exactly, but in one of the "Two Black Crows" series one of them plays the kazoo, and the other asks for "The war song, 'Over There.'" The kazoo player instead plays "How Dry I Am," whereupon the other guy says "No, that's over *here*, and I'm moving to Canada immediately!"

"Hello Montreal!" by Ted Lewis.

Like Alex, I also have "Simon the Bootlegger" by Flotsam & Jetsam, a comic skit on the Victorian ballad "Simon the Cellarer".

"What-cha Gonna Do When There Ain't No Jazz!" Esther Walker. Mentions the Volstead act

"Three Thousand Years Ago"--mentions it offhand in comparison of ancient Egypt with 1920s America. Weird song.

Oh yeah! I forgot I had that one. I also have the Waring's Pennsylvanians version too.
