Dear Fran,
I've finally got round to checking out the details of my mighty Q.

As follows:

Graphophone Q
1) What is your Q’s base type? 1a
2) What is your Q’s serial number? 610180
3) What type of governor support is used at its end (opposite the motor)? Stanchion
4) What is the last date stamped on the end stanchion? March 30 1897
5) If your Q has a mandrel tag, how many cities are listed on it? 8 + New York
6) Does your mandrel have a flange for the belt to ride inside? Yes
7) Does your drive pulley have a flat end, or one with a channel? Flat
8) IF CASED, which type banner decal is on the front of the lid? Type 5
9) IF CASED, and your Q’s lid has a decal on the back, what is the last date on it? N/A
10) IF CASED, and your Q’s lid has a paper label INSIDE, what is it marked? N/A

Hope this helps.

All the best

Hiya everyone,

Thank you for your responses, and I look forward to many more in the future months and years!

I'm not currently able to edit my original post on Page 1 of this thread, however I'd like for any of you who have the capability to accurately measure fine threads, to measure your feed screws. Particularly the owners of the early Qs.

Thank you all very much,
Fran

EDIT: Just for clarity and posterity, I've measured the drive pulleys and feedscrews for both my "early" Q and my "late" Q. As I indicated in the post I linked above, the geartrains remained unchanged between the two versions of Qs I examined.

The following are their respective dimensions (early ----> late).

Pulleys:
0.827" ----> 1.077"

Feedscrews:
5/16-48(?) ----> 5/16-40 (My thread gauges don't go smaller than 40 TPI - so I consulted my Machinists Handbook to guess at the next finer thread possibility.)

I'd be very interested in others' results.

Best,
Fran

Columbia QB - 1.jpg
I have a boxed Q (QB), with serial number 333,730. It is interesting that one of the reported cased Q's has an earlier number (322,061).

Other answers:
1a
2. QB 333,730
3a
4. Mar 30, 1897
5. 9
6. Yes
7a

Thank you Rick. The cardboard boxed QB, and their (later?) counterpart the QA, represent the ultimate of cased models for me.

I notice only one "Q" listed with the Type 11 banner decal. Would this decal be considered a very late version?

I don't know the answer to that. The QA with it certainly isn't the highest serial number recorded thusfar.

Maybe George P. can help with an answer?
