Making cylinder peg questions.

I remember seeing an old post about making cylinder pegs from cardboard shipping tubes as oppose to buying reproductions. What measurements of shipping tubes would work, and how should I make the end caps?
I might be replacing pegs for a cylinder cabinet in the near future, trying to cut down on costs.

Check with these folks. They have the tubes and also the paper end caps. You want roughly 1-½" to 1-⅝" outside diameter tubes.

I've made flats for carrying around groups of a dozen
brown wax blanks and storage for them.

So far I've used paper towel and toilet paper tubes.

The flats are those little cardboard boxes from the
grocery store shelves which hold a dozen cans of
various canned goods.

I cut the cardboard pegs a few inches long, enough to
hold a blank firmly. Then I cut a series of slits
around one end of the short tube. The slits are spaced
about half an inch apart. Then the tabs (usually 10 or
so of them) get bent out at 90 degrees.

Then, using Weldwood contact cement from a quart can
from WalMart, the 12 tubes get glued to the box.

Maybe you could use some variation of that technique.
If you want a solid top on the tube, you can cut a circle
of cardbaord somewhat larger diameter than the tube.
Then cut slits and bend down the tabs and glue it
in the tube, at the top.

Maybe that would work? Not sure of the exact diameter
but try some various tubes until you find the right size.

Contact cement works very well for gluing this all
together.

I use to sell tubes in lots of 100. They are made from 1 ½” (ID) by 36” mailing tubes. The 36” tubes are the cheapest. The cut them in 3” lengths getting 12 pegs per tube.I buy the mailing tubes at Staples. The 1 ½” end caps I buy from Pyro Direct in lots of 100. Hope this info helps. They are very simple to make. I use Elmer’s clear glue on the end plugs. One more hint, I use a 1 ½” hole saw blade to clean out the old glue on the shelves.

Thanks all of you for the suggestions, and that's exactly was I was looking for Rich! I saw you're homemade pegs from older posts and was wondering where to source or how to make the caps (maybe I should have just messaged you ). I will probably also buy number stamps just to add some detail. Will update.

I am building a cabinet for my Amberola and had been puzzling how to store and display the cylinders. The image of your drawer clarified my design. I will post images when complete.
