Edison B80 on Shopgoodwill in AZ - Unique Reproducer?

Post by CDBPDX »

There is being offered on SHOPGOODWILL in Tucson, Arizona an Edison B80 disc phonograph with an unusual and attractive lateral adaptor reproducer. Unfortunately, it is a 'pick-up only' item. Anybody there interested??

I saw this earlier today while prowling around on shopgoodwill.com. I was struck by how tiny the horn is compared to the voluminous interior of the cabinet! Is that original to this machine?

Yes, that is the original horn for this machine. This is a very early version of an Edison Diamond Disc phono. The horn pivots in the back, unlike later models where the horn pivots in the front. Because of this, the horn needs to be much smaller in front to accommodate the back and forth movement across the front of the cabinet. The mechanism that raises and lowers the horn/reproducer assembly is mounted on the back of the horn. It also has a belt driven turntable, something Edison abandoned in late 1913 when the front pivot horn was introduced.
The motor mounts to the floor of the cabinet in the back corner on the right instead of underneath the motor board and is very unusual. The horn pivot bracket mounts to the inside back of the cabinet.
Some of the early reproducers for this cabinet had the volume control inside the reproducer, a butterfly type that opened and closed when you rotate the knob on the mounting pin.
It has a single spring motor, a real monster spring, only 1 1/16" wide but .038" thick and 21 feet long. When I order new springs, this is the only one that arrives with 2 retaining rings. All the others only have 1 retaining ring.
A pretty cool machine!

Just to clarify, the A/B 60/80 was introduced at the same time as the larger Edison Disc Phonographs whose horns pivoted from the front. The odd design of the 60/80 was the result of trying to build the machine as inexpensively as possible. This particular B-80 carries a high serial number, and was probably manufactured in late 1914.

I appreciate the offer - Thanks! I'm going to give it a pass, right now I have one just like it in the shop, serial number SM 7876.

I do like the reproducer on it, though.

Winning bid was $116. Did a Forum member get it?
