Duo-Vox on Ebay

Post by estott »

Here's a scarce Bush & Lane Duo-Vox on Ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/BEAUTIFLUL-ANTIQUE- ... 2c576a040b

This high quality machine features a diamond pointed head to play Edison discs. Bush & Lane built expensive pianos and the machine is likewise high quality. SOMEONE ON HERE GET THIS!!

Now I'd call that case far from ugly, it follows the general lines of Bush & Lane piano cases, which tended to be rather massive.

I have a Duo-Vox lowboy with cabriole legs that looks rather unassuming. It's in storage and I have no photo available, sorry.

That piano is about the ugliest piano I think I've seen. What a strange mismatch of styles.

I am not certain that I would call that piano ugly, but I do agree it does not seem to have any sort of style it was trying to emulate. I am not certain how it would fit into the look of a home given that it is going off on in it own direction. The phonograph seems to have the same mindset in its design as well. It does look very solid, but somehow the top and the body do not seem to have been made to blend with each other. It really is a strange piece to look at :?

The cabinet of the upright Duo-Vox looks remarkably similar to that of the Brooks Repeater, particularly the lines of the domed lid. I would venture to guess that the phono cabinets were probably contract-built in Grand Rapids by a furniture company as opposed to being built at the Bush & Lane factory.

I'd disagree with the Grand Rapids theory for either firm. One of the primary reasons piano makers got into the talking machine business was that they had cabinet making facilities available, Starr and Kimball being two examples, and of course Aeolian. As to Brooks, they were a builder of wooden boats.

I did have a nice looking Bush & Lane phonograph but a different top than the duo-vox . Bush & Lane wasn't limited to phonos only check out this radio that just listed on Ebay.
