Nice Visit-- Nice Young Collector

Post by outune »

I had the opportunity to meet Martin today (Mormon S on the forum) when he stopped by my place to pick up something he purchased. At just 17 years old, I was very impressed with both his knowledge of the hobby and his desire to learn all that he can. He and his mom -- who shares his enthusiasm for phonographs-- made the trip from North Carolina. I thoroughly enjoyed the visit and probably bored them with too many phonograph stories from my 43+ years of collecting.

I know there are a few other young men and women who are also taking the baton for the future of the hobby. If all are as pleasant to deal with as Martin, then the hobby will be just fine. His attention to detail and historical accuracy in restorations will serve him and the hobby well. I look forward to seeing him at shows and to his continued presence on the Forum.
and.... I'm confident that Martin will someday find that Hexaphone he wants! :)

Thanks, Martin, for an enjoyable visit!

Thank you so much for the kind message Brad! The trip was as much worth is to meet you than it was to buy the cabinet. You have a great collection, and it was fun to see things I dont get to see too often.

Compliments are hard to accept, so I'll throw it right back at you. I actually loved to hear all of you're great stories, and wish we could have stayed longer, we would have if we didnt have to drive 5 hours back home! I will thoroughly enjoy the cabinet.

Thanks!
Martin

Martin would also be welcome to visit here, but I realize Texas is a long way from his area.

It would be nice to meet a young collector like Martin who lives in my area. We need young collectors in order to "pass the baton" on to them and keep preserving the hobby.

Thanks for posting the experience!

Always great to hear about a "good kid", no matter what hobby they're in. Best to you Martin, in your phonograph hobby and in life.

I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Martin, but he has been an invaluable friend through social media! He has certainly shared some of his knowledge with me, and has been very helpful when I have questions.

Collecting phonographs has certainly been a joy for me so far. And part of the joy is sharing it with others as well. I have brought one of my table top phonographs to my college and played various records for my classes and my classmates all seemed to enjoy it. As well as giving some vocal majors various opera recordings on cd.

All this to say..... thank you Martin for inspiring me to keep my collection going. I think if I hadn’t met Martin on Instagram I would’ve stopped my collection early on and not be where I am today. So thank you Martin!

P.S. —If any collectors are driving through Knox for one reason or another, shoot me a pm. I would love to meet some of you guys.

Awesome to hear about Martin and other young collectors... I started rather young, too. I was around 15 - 16 years old when I began seriously seeking out phonographs and other collectibles in the eastern VA and NC area. I also enjoyed talking to the older guys, going to auctions, watching the interactions, etc. As I am now in the my thirties, I look back on those times with fondness.

Life may throw some "curveballs" but antiques (specifically "phonographs" as it pertains to this discussion) are always a nice hobby to return to... As for me, I have run out of room and I found that the history behind these things fascinates me as much or more than the item itself. So, I approach this more as a historian now.

But, with that said, I do find myself still buying select machines that peek my interest. As Doc Holiday says, "my hypocrisy knows no bounds...." ;)

I can attest to this. Martin is pretty cool. I can't say I follow him anywhere except this Forum but I've seen his Instagram & Reddit posts defending the mighty phonograph.

One good thing is, he's very fond of phonographs.

But better than that, he is very kind. We need a few more Martins out there in phonograph land.

Thank you guys for the nice comments! After visiting and talking to Jalal at phonogallerie, Brad, Charles, other forum member and collectors, I've been inspired to talk to more people and visit peoples collections. Cant wait to meet more of you guys.

Martin
