Old newspaper articles about collectors & other phono topics

Post by AmberolaAndy »

In this thread I will share some old newspaper articles I clipped from Newspapers.com about phono collectors of the past. Enjoy! Will update this thread when I find more!

An article about a Texas collector March 16, 1972.

neat! This guy started collecting them when my credenza was relatively new. My guess is that he wasn't interested in collecting upright machines because they were too new.

Many articles I’m going to post were written in the days before the internet. So there’s going to be a lot of guessing on what year things were made. Like this 1992 question this person had with their Edison machine. Lots of people assuming a patent date as a manufacture date.

Going thru some things today and found a booklet called ---The Old Music Shop, put out by Century House of Watkins Glen, N.Y. by Dr. and Mrs Larry Freeman and their 3 sons---James, John, and Peter from the year 1958. Interesting ---talks about the different musical items from the 1800's and up to the crank phonograph era and lists places to visit, like The Musical Museum in Deansboro, N.Y. (My wife and I took our Celestina up there and had the bellows done)---a long time ago.

Charles Kennedy passed away back in 2018, he was about 96 years old. It’s unbelievable, how time passes. We don’t get to enjoy the hobby forever, so that’s why we have to get the young interested.

My local paper did a write-up on my budding collection in 1963. I posted the article and photos on my website, with some comments. It's available HERE. That led to some great finds.

Many people in those days found the idea of collecting old phonographs to be very strange!
Above is my favorite quote from Rene's website...

I think many people today still think of collecting old phonograph to be very strange! 8-)
