What are some of your mislabeled records?

Post by AmberolaAndy »

Well this might be a first for me in 12 years of collecting records. I bought a lot of blue Silvertone records from eBay and one of the records labeled “Uncle Josh At A Baseball Game” I thought I was gonna get Cal Stewart laughing at himself as talking about baseball in the 1900s, but instead I got a completely different performance of some quartet singing!

I’m sure a lot of you who have been in the collecting game longer than me (and some less) has come across stuff like this.

What are some of YOUR stories about getting records with the wrong label on them?

I only have one such disc, it's Hattie Hudson on Columbia 14279-D, "Doggone My Good Luck Soul" is labeled on both sides.
One side should read "Black Hand Blues".

My only mislabeled record is Victor #1326, "Rip van Winkle Was a Lucky Man", by Dan W. Quinn, labeled as #1376, "Wearing of the Green", by J.W. Myers. Someone in the factory was not paying enough attention, and the catalog numbers looked similar...

Just google information found on the record.
I entered, Decca 23954, to find it is "I Do, Do, Do Like You".

I have a copy of HMV B.8480, a Benny Goodman record, with both sides originally labeled "If I Could Be With You (One Hour Tonight)". On the side that's actually "Stompin' At The Savoy", someone decades ago taped a neatly cut typewritten overlay that simply reads SAVOY in all caps. (I didn't even register why it would have that overlay until I noticed that the matrix number at the bottom of the label on both sides was the same...)

Not mine, but a friend once had a record that was supposed to have harpsichord music by Purcell but ended up being some hillbilly group doing a rousing rendition of--if I remember the song title correctly--"Cumberland Gap."
