“Say It While Dancing” by the Broadway Dance Orchestra 1922

Post by melvind »

I haven't transferred an Edison Diamond Disc record for quite awhile. I found them frustrating to capture and I had different heads wired differently and it all just go too complicated to keep track of. And, I often had trouble cleaning up the sound the way I was doing it. Sometimes it worked well, other times, terrible. So, I used a new technique (to me) when transferring this record to digital. I used a stereo cartridge to capture the record. I then used Audacity to Invert one of the stereo tracks and finally combined the two stereo tracks into a single Mono track. This in essence captures the sound of the vertical recording without the empty lateral groove noise. It is easier than wiring a phono cartridge to accomplish the same thing. I think it turned out pretty well. At least in this recording, it worked very well. I will try a few more to see if I was just lucky.

I think it sounds fantastic.
It seems to retain that punchy sound of a diamond disc machine, but without any record hiss.
You've done a great job.
Thanks for sharing.

Dan, it sounds wonderful. I did the same for certain records too... but I'm more used to Goldwave software, basically similar. Nice work.

I never found who the singer was. DAHR normaly lists such things, but not for this. If you find out let me know.

Sutton's Blue Amberol book credits the singer as Lewis James. He indicates that the identity of the group is not indicated in the Edison files.
