Wrong parts on a Triumph D mandrel assembly?

Post by MikeB »

Hi -

I purchased what is supposed to be an Edison Triumph Model D mandrel assembly. I believe that the collar and the support pin for the mandrel shaft are incorrect, and possibly that the entire assembly is wrong. I even think it possible that this is an assembly from an earlier 2/4 conversion kit for a Home or Triumph. But maybe I'm not understanding something. So I need your opinions.

Here is a picture of the mandrel assembly I received. After spending hours trying to install this into a Triumph D bed plate, I came to the following conclusions:

The mandrel shaft collar is from an earlier machine that had an end gate, like a Triumph Model B. The collar is attached to a longer shaft, rather than just being a thin collar that snugs up against a stationary mandrel bearing, like on my other Triumph Model D. (I think that the longer part attached to the collar on this was made to spin freely within mandrel shaft bed plate support, while the shaft was held in pace by the end gate on the right of the earlier machine).

The mandrel shaft support pin with attached gear that supports the left side of the mandrel shaft (not sure what this is called) is too short. Maybe it came from a Home, or from a conversion kit? Total length is about 1 ⅛ inches, while the pin on my other Triumph is about 1 ¼ inches. I've tried installing, and the thick end of the pin is recessed too deeply into the support, rather than protruding a little from the end. This is with the mandrel pushed in as far as it will go. Was the pin for the Home shorter?

Here are some pictures. I have installed the shaft on a Triumph bed plate to show how the pin is too short. I also have included a picture of my Triumph Model B with a 2/4 conversion kit, which is different than this assembly but still has similarities.

Please note that the fourth picture is of my Triumph Model B with 2/4 gearing conversion, which I've shown for comparison only.

Thanks for your helpful expert opinions -
Mike

It looks like you have the rotating assembly for an A or B early style kit. The thrust collar and clutch casing are certainly for A/B machines. The support pin, or left-end bearing is the same on A-D machines, though I have yet to personally confirm this on a Model D Triumph machine.

This overview video of 2/4 minute Truimph A & B and Home B & D machines may help:

As said in the previous post, the mandrel collar you purchased is for an A/B. Here is a photo of the D collar:

Hi,

I’m looking for a 2/4 min conversion for an A Model Triumph.. What is your kit marked? I have a kit for a B model Triumph, I would trade..

Thanks,

Stuart
