I tend to avoid playing laminated records and records with an RCA Victor label on my acoustic machines and default to the couple of modern turntables that are set up for 78s, but am I being too conservative with that approach?

I don't think you can ever be too conservative when it comes to records, cylinder or disc.

I think anything you can do that produces less wear and makes them last longer can only be a good think.
Whenever I find a copy of a record I particularly like and play often and already have, I'll always buy a second copy without hesitation, in some cases even a third copy.
I keep the best copy which never gets played acoustically, and the other I know I can play on any machine without fear of wearing it out.
