Re: Edison Cygnet cranes
I would imagine there will be mixed feelings on adding a cygnet crane and mount to a phonograph that doesn't already have one. I don't think it's a good idea. Part of the hobby that is interesting to me is seeing and using these old phonographs just as they were when originally purchased and used. I try to leave them just as I find them as much as possible. Of course you will come across incomplete machines that need parts replaced, but if it is complete I try to leave it as found with just some maintenance and light cleaning. Just my opinion of course.

"mixed feelings" is very true. In the end, I suppose it's YOUR machine to do as YOU want with it. However, there is something to be said for easy reversibility of changes. For example, I converted my Triumph B to a top-carriage, but after acquiring a later Triumph which had the top carriage originally with another model O, I really wanted to go back to using the lighter C and H reproducers on my model B which never really fit quite right with an adapter in the top-mount.
I suppose my point is that in the future if your collection expands and you want to go back to the "original" configuration, how easy is it to do? Even though they're in the rear of the machine, you'd still have to fill in those screw holes to "go back."

Is it wrong to install a cygnet crane on a machine that didnt have one originally but could have? Say you find a home or standard and want to upgrade. Is it considered OK to drill the case?
Opinions may vary but I would never do it. There are too many machines out there already, with holes drilled and all you need to do is find a back bracket for one of these.
Also I think we see far too few clean standards, Homes and Triumps with the earlier straight horn configuration imho. I think these look very attractive although they do take alot of space!
