Hello all,
I have made a few posts on the Facebook groups, but thought I would also ask here. I will be in the Cincinnati, Ohio area the week of July 12. My 87 year old dad is from the area, and I am taking my dad and mom there for a visit. We actually fly in to Columbus, and then will drive to Cincy, as we have done before. Would be interested in meeting some local collectors. I am mostly a cylinder collector, but love all taking machines! Always looking to buy smalls--like cylinders, reproducers, etc. Things I can pack in to my carry on bag!
Being an avid genealogist, on these trips I will be making visits to local cemeteries, historical societies, and meeting with distant cousins. I am excited to be meeting up with one cousin, who now lives in Florida, who has a box full of family pictures from the 1880's and 1890's he will be bringing for me to look through!
My mom, dad, and I also love to eat! We look forward to Skyline Chili, Gold Star Chili (I love Chili and spaghetti!), White Castle, Bob Evans, and Cracker Barrel. Oh, and I can't forget the local Grippo's Bar-B-Que chips, and Esther Price Candy! We basically eat our way through Ohio! Think I will tip the scale in the wrong direction when I get home!

Re: Cincinnati, Ohio area
The genealogy part should be the most fun...
I discovered a family photo in Cincinnati that had been "lost" since 1905. It was in the basement of a cousin's house with no ID written on it. It's the only picture of my grandfather and his family that I have. I was only able to identify it, since I had found a picture of my cousin's grandfather (my grandfather's brother) in the Detroit public library. He was in the picture opposite my grandfather, along with his three sisters and mother and father.
Good luck, hope you find something exciting... Make copies of all of those pictures, even though you might not recognize them right now, who knows what will turn up later.

My wife and I serve at our church's Family History Center. We also enjoy doing family history, genealogy, and sometimes explore cemeteries.
Our daughter lived in Ohio several years ago. She learned that when you use a drive thru at a fast food place, sales tax is not charged. They now live in Pennsylvania. When we visited there we learned that clothing is not taxed!
I hope you can find some good deals for your cylinder collection. After checking the internet, I noticed a collector named Lynn Bilton who lives in Randolph, Ohio.

I know I'll get in trouble for this, but I have found Skyline Chili to be the most inedible, god awful stuff ever concocted! It's not food. That said, many people like it. Maybe you do/will too. Best of luck to yougsphonos wrote: Tue Jul 06, 2021 1:28 am

Have you ever had White Castle hamburgers? Just a word of caution. I like them, but I would never eat any if I had to share a car ride afterwards with people I cared about

Enjoy your trip! I'm from Michigan, but love travelling in Ohio. I've probably driven well over 15,000 miles of Ohio's backroads in a 1921 Model T Ford.

Hi Jerry! Yes, Skyline Chili is an acquired taste, I must agree!! My son humored me, last summer, when I moved him from CA to a new job in Washington DC, and went through Cincinnati. He acted like he enjoyed it, but then later told my daughter it wasn't something he would eat again!!
Yes, White Castle is great--once in awhile, and we will crack the windows, if we are in the car too long! One day I would love to get a Model T. We really enjoyed going to the Henry Ford and Dearfield Village a couple of years back!

Hello Don,
Thank you for the info. on Lynn Bilton. I met him at a Union Show, some years back. Just a little too far! We did get to Don Gfell, in Milan, Ohio, one year, and loved seeing his shop and the Edison birthplace!
I have a relative coming up from Florida, who has a plastic tub of old family photos from the 1800's, so I am really looking forward to that! I went to his house in Florida, last summer, and copied everything we thought he had, then he discovered more boxes in a closet, so I am still very excited! I use my Iphone to take a picture of every single picture and document, front and back, and it is so easy to edit a picture on the Iphone, and I have plenty of storage, so it works out great! I have been able to identify many pictures from the 1860's to 1890's by just using a little detective work, and it is rewarding!
I think I realized that about tax in drive through restaraunts on a previous trip--we definitely don't have that here in CA! Didn't you come to a CAPS/APS phono show here in CA , some years back? I think I met you and your wife there.

Hi Curt,
I was mixing up messages, and I made a note in the post above, to Don, about taking pictures of EVERYTHING with my Iphone! I really am looking forward to seeing these pictures that I missed on a previous trip. Of course, all of the immediate family pictures are usually the ones with no names on them. After all, we know who are aunts, uncles, parents, and cousins are! That is until 125 years, or so, go by! But, I have had success in identifying a number of key ancestors! It's always awesome to add another picture to the family tree! Glad you found your grandpa's picture! You just never know what is still out there hiding! Same with phonographs!

Yes, Mike, we were at the California show about ten years ago. You have a good memory. If we can arrange it, we might come to the show this year, but it depends on church work.
