A motor which does not turn the turntable

Post by poodling around »

I fairly recently acquired a (very) Dark Blue Crocodile 'skin' HMV 101.

When fully wound the turntable would not move. (Well it reluctantly moved VERY slowly - sometimes).

I assumed that the spring needed re-greasing, which wasn't something I would not enjoy.

However, when I added oil and grease to the correct places the motor worked perfectly. It now has absolutely no difficulty playing one side of a 12 inch record. (In fact, it is one of the strongest HMV portable motors I have).

The main problem area appeared to be (what I think is called) 'the worm gear'.

The motor had clearly not been looked at since it was originally put together.

I thought that this was worth mentioning as it was a quick, easy and instantaneous 'fix' - which may be overlooked by new collectors - and people like me.
