Interesting Off-Brands

Post by audiophile102 »

There are so many interesting and often rare off brands I thought it would be good to create a thread to have some photos available for anyone interested. Here is the first one I found on Facebook marketplace. It's a Le Grand made in Illinois.

That's a nice looking "off brand" machine. I tend to stick to Victrolas because parts are readily available plus I know more about working on them than other machines, but if I find a unique off brand in the wild I would purchase.

Seen on ebay in Texas.. "Antique replica Victrola record player, built by my grandfather 1919 while in living in Jonesboro, AR. Works well and still plays records with legible audio. I'm not sure how clear / good it is supposed to sound given my ears are tuned to today's digital recorded/played music."

Earlier this year, I went after a Regina phonograph posted on The Forum----("The chicken coop model"). I say that because it was stored in a chicken coop, maybe to play soothing music to help the chickens lay more eggs or maybe even try to get them to lay "the elusive golden egg". The feature that makes this unique is that the lid is one piece but the top of the lid is a hinged 2 piece, so the front half opens up allowing the horn, which is constructed upward in front of the motorboard, to hear the music play, it also has a volume control knob. The grill is for "looks", since the sound is not directed through it like most phonographs. Really like the machine---just not sure if I can play poached, sunny-side, or scrambled records on it.

Nice Looking cabinet on a "concert" phonograph made by the piano manufacturer wing and son. Has a pretty neat auto brake.

Nice looking cabinet indeed. The amazing variety of off-brand machines continues to interest me. Each region of the country had furniture makers who came up with quite interesting cabinets.

Yeah its pretty nice. Theres some offbrands that have pretty ugly cabinets, like my waddell Phonograph table, I got lucky with it because it has a cool feature. The drop leaf in the front comes forward when the lid is closed.

Here is the listing for the wing and son machine, Take a look at the documents that are included. Really incredible history if anyone is interested!
