I believe the first Schoolhouse had a regular Victor spearpoint horn. The machine went through many variations and the last horn had a much larger area that connected to the elbow. Which one do you need?

Jerry,

I always thought that the schoolhouse used the smooth non-speartip horn..Were the early ones spear-tipped? I know that the late versions had the larger (2-inch?) elbow..

Early Schoolhouse machines used the spearpoint horn-- same as a Vic V-- with the smaller elbow. Later machines used a smooth horn, sized for a larger elbow that (as far as I know) was only used on the Schoolhouse. I have had one of each over the years. I have no idea when the changeover was done--or at what serial number. Perhaps others can shed light on that.

On a schoolhouse horn, the decal, does it display upside down if used on a regular Victor and Vice versa on the schoolhouse? If you put a wood horn on a schoolhouse and the decal is upside down, it’s not an original schoolhouse horn?

Or am I wrong?

I have a schoolhouse horn I could let go of. It came on a machine and has some chipping of veneer on outside of bell. I was offered a nicer horn and put that one on my early schoolhouse . If you like I can dust it off and send photos. Tim

The late, very wonderful Don Gfell had several of them at one point. I don't think he used them himself, but he would sell them to people (like me) who would use them (though I only bought/used one of them). I don't know who made them for him. They're frankly kind of clumsy, and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone unless you have no other option for a Victor V or a Victor D that you're trying to set up with an original Victor wood horn. They look flat out wrong on a smaller Victor like an M or a III. They extend the collar on a Schoolhouse horn -- already pretty wide -- by several inches, and the effect (in my opinion) is not a pleasing one. But as I said, that's just my opinion. Others might be happy to have an original Victor wood horn, regardless of whether or not it's intended for use with their phonograph.
