The best outcome would probably result from using a professional brass instrument repair person, such as John Duffy at the Horn House. Still, you can do nearly as well by using proper techniques and products. A number of them were recommended in this thread:

Flitz Tarnish Remover

It's amazing at removing tarnish. Depending on the level of tarnish, it can work in just a few minutes. No scrubbing or buffing needed. After you use it, wash it off, then polish with your favorite brass polish.

Thanks for the info. Will give it a try. I have used Flitz on polishing aluminum and steel before with great results but never knew it made brass cleaner.
