WANTED Decade after Decade

Post by Guyotsmith1 »

I know that many friends who read these messages have had elusive records on their want-lists, as have I. I've sought the following Grey Gull-related 78s for several decades, always without success. Grey Gull being a low-priced group of labels, it would seem that original purchasers did not care enough to preserve them, and we know that the occasionally sub-standard pressings wore out. Nevertheless, I periodically dust off my hopeless want-list in the event that someone may have a lead as to where copies of these discs might be obtained.

BELLBIRD 132 Frank Luther "Cryin' for the Carolines"
GREY GULL/RADIEX 2527 Jeff Calhoun or Frank Luther "Cryin' for the Carolines"
VAN DYKE 82527 Frank Luther, etc. "Cryin' for the Carolines"
SUNRISE (catalogue number unknown) Francis Crowell (perhaps) "Cryin' for the Carolines"
GREY GULL/RADIEX 2493 Frank Luther "Liza"
" " 2504 Jeff Calhoun or Frank Luther "A Little Lady"
" " 2509 " " "Rest Nest"
" " 2510 " " "When the Twilight Shadows Fall"
" " 2518 " " "Love Me Some More"/"Wouldn't it Be Wonderful?"
" " 2540 " " "A Bundle of Old Letters"
MADISON 5053 Tom Cook "Pictures From Life's Other Side"/"When They Ring Those Golden Bells For You and Me"

Since these records are not generally in demand, few sellers would probably make the effort to tote them to a record show. Grey Gull vocals turn up far less often than the dance band series, as you all know. It's also interesting to note that Grey Gull, in its final days, offered its catalogue to dealers with a lower price for "old standard selections" (PD titles) than for current songs, under copyright. I have never seen a copy of Grey Gull/Radiex 2527, although the song enjoyed great popularity in 1930 and the record was listed in catalogues of the era - and yet I know of no one who has ever owned or viewed a copy. It seems likely I'll never find it -- but it remains on my want-list, where it has occupied a prominent place for years!
Best wishes to everyone.
