Great gramophone painting
What do you think? I found it on flikr today, it's awesome! The electrola looks very similar to a HMV101, but I'm assuming this is a German painting

I like the score in front of her as she dreams of being the next Jeritza or Bettendorf or Renee Chemet....Showing that a serious young music student can get much benefit from the gramophone.

Well, since the artist's signature seems to be '(Henry?) Boothby', I doubt that it's German......

I had my doubts, as well, about the gender of the androgynous figure.Lucius1958 wrote:Well, since the artist's signature seems to be '(Henry?) Boothby', I doubt that it's German......

Re: Great gramophone painting
I wonder if this originally was a magazine ad for the German made Electrola phonograph. I notice the word "Electrola" is visible at the rear of the soundbox as well as on the cover of a piece of literature on her desk. Peter Olliphant had one of these for sale a few years ago at the Wayne show. This machine was rather cool as it could be played either spring wound or could be plugged into an electrical outlet. There was a switch on the motorboard that allowed you to select several types of current depending what country you lived in.
I hesitated when I first saw it and when I returned later, it was sold.
