speed regulator problems.
Check to make sure that the felt pads are contacting the brass governor disc, using some penetrant on the sleeve that the rocker arm arm is on, is important, and that the rocker arm does indeed adjust twards and away from the governor disc. when servicing the governor, make sure it is and wound down compleatly with no tension on the motor before ever moving the governor, because, if it is would up, and you release the governor gears can become stripped.

I agree with the last two posts. Your governor isn't controlling the speed correctly, and you're using the felt pad on the stop lever to control the speed. Check the pad and the position of the disc that rubs up against it.
According to the Reiss book, Standard Model A machines (with the banner decal in the front) were made from 1901 to 1905, so a date of 1903 may very well be the case.

Bill,
I think i need to adjust the position of the Govenor, how is this done? Because obviously you should be able to have the switch all the way over in play and have it play at the right speed. i have to put the switch in the middle almost off to slow it down all the way so its correct, the speed scre is almost all the way unthraded and its still a little to fast so i bet thats what it is, or like you said i need a new spring. the one on there now looks fine but i cant tell ifits stretched to far

Boy you guys are all great, thanks so much for all your time and help, i really do apreciate and value your knowledge of this. Your right Shane thats what im doing is using the brake felt to slow it down so explain what i need to adjust so i can correct this, the pads look very good, not worn down at all really good length to them. I will posta few pics for you goys to see the machine this week.
I noticed though when its playing the gears make a noise, i put some il on them and they are a little quieter now. I think itjust needs a good servicing. The lady i got it from hardly used it, all she ever did was put a new belt on it and thats all

On your governor control, the screw that comes through the bedplate on a Standard Type A should be about at the middle of its threads. If it is almost out of the machine, and the curved arm that controls the governor brake yoke is in contact with it, and the speed is still way too fast, then the governor itself does need to be moved. DO NOT loosen the shaft to do this, however! Let the motor run down, then loosen the small set screw[s] on the brass collar at the right end of the governor [not the screws holding the flat springs, the
set screw[s]. Slide the assembly [including the pressure plate, springs and weights] to the right and re-tighten. Then see if the governor controls properly. You may have to try this adjustment two or three times to get it exactly where you want it, but the proper speed of 160rpm should be at about the middle of the control arm [and speed screw] travel.

Hi bob, yes it worked thank you. I'm new to the Edison machines, this is my first. I'm going to rebuild the reproducer this week as soon as my gaskets get here, maybe tomorrow.
I have a question bob, what's the little knob on the back part of the thing that holds the reproducer? Not the set screw that tightens it, but the little knob, looks like the same style knob as the speed one. It's on the thing that rides along the track rail as it's playing? WhT does it control, I didn't touch it but jus so I know what all the things control is all

Victrolaman,
That knob on the rear of your carriage arm is for the shaving mechanism. W/o photos, it's hard to tell if the shaver is still present. These were done away with by the Mod. B.

You can adjust the governor position by moving the bearings to the left or right (in this case, to the right); you could also, perhaps, move the governor itself on its shaft, by loosening the set screw on the right-hand sleeve. This will move the disc closer to the yoke, and hopefully slow the motor down.Victrolaman wrote:Bill,
