“On This Day in the History of Recorded Sound…”

December 20, 1892: Gianni Bettini was granted a U.S. patent (No.488,381)for a mechanical pantograph, which would allow for duplication of cylinder records.

December 20, 1893: Henri Lioret filed for a U.S. patent for a talking doll, which was eventually manufactured as the “Bebe Jumeau.” This was the first spring-driven talking doll using interchangeable cylinders (made of celluloid).

December 20, 1895: Frank Capps filed for a U.S. patent for a “Spring Motor for Phonographs.” This would become the Edison “Triton” motor, which powered the Edison Spring-Motor, Triumph, and Concert Phonographs for the next 17 years.
