RARE A.I.C.C. CYLINDER - ENRICO CARUSO

Post by 75suonidelpassato »

I am selling a VERY RARE cylinder from the ANGLO-ITALIAN COMMERCE COMPANY - Genoa - Milan -
of the tenor ENRICO CARUSO – 2 MINUTES -

Writings on the upper edge of the cylinder:
TENORE CAV. ( in italian cavaliere) ENRICO CARUSO
THE ITALIAN COMMERCE COMP' (sic!!) - without the word ANGLO... !!!
MILAN - GENOA
P.F. (Pathè Frères) 10201
(Pathè bought Anglo-Italian and distributed Caruso's cylinders)
84006
(in italian) Gli Ugonotti - QUI SOTTO IL CIEL DELLA TURRENA
THE HUGUONOTS - HERE UNDER THE SKY OF TURRENA

At the base of the hard cardboard cylindrical container:
(printed):
R. JAFORTE
VIA CHIAIA 31
NAPLES

(pencil):
(in italian) – Ugonotti – Qui sotto il ciel della Turenna ,,,(!!) - Tenore Caruso -
HUGUONOTS
HERE UNDER THE SKY OF TURENNA (sic!!)
TENOR CARUSO

The Jaforte store in Naples was an AICC dealer, as in newspaper advertisement from 1905-

Conditions as in photo, as found, mold on the base, on the upper end and some spots on the cylinder, structure in good condition, without cracks or scratches.

I am a restorer of phonographs and gramophones, a well-informed expert, and I have a substantial library on sound recording and reproduction, so I ask for the utmost seriousness, send serious offers ONLY IN EURO, advance payment with Paypal.

Shipping and collection at the buyer's expense by international couriers UPS - TNT - FEDEX with my careful packaging included.

This is not eBay or an auction site... "Best Offer" doesn't work.

I don't care for it either, but sorry, yes it does work according to the rules:

Georg,

I believe "Enquire" suggests that the seller has a set price in mind but wishes that it remain confidential between themselves and an interested party.

Hi Jerry:
I'm just quoting the rules. This is obviously a super rare piece. I already know I could not afford it (the fact that I decided to swear off cylinders years ago aside), but I think it's really cool to see super rarities like this offered here in any case. I hope someone here gets it! Seems a wonderful opportunity for the right collector.

Yup, no problem Georg. :) However it sells, it is certainly is fun to just see pictures of it. I'm sure the right collector will close the deal on it, regardless of sale terms.

Is this the same recording as the Pathé ones? I believe there were three Caruso Pathé cylinders. Is this a different recording? It is unique and interesting to see this one, although I have no idea what they might sell for. Some years ago I was able to get reproductions of the Pathé Caruso cylinders, although I don’t believe they’re made any more.

I have a Caruso Pathé etched-label center start record with the same piece in the photo of Il Ugonotti on one side, and E Lucevan le Estelle on the other. I read that both were transcribed from cylinders, and the short durations of both are consistent with them being 2-minute cylinder transcriptions. What is harder to figure out is if the record that served as source for the disc is the same record in the cylinder: artists used to record several takes, and the companies issued them as matrices wore out.
