Please Destroy Your Record

Post by CarlosV »

As I rummaged in a pile of records to be cleaned and filed, I stumbled on the curious label pictured below, from a Pathé record sleeve: it promotes the exchange of old records (or records that
the customer got tired of playing) for new ones, provided that the customer beforehand gouges the old one with a metallic point, preferably applying utmost strength. Evidently collecting records was not a matter of concern in those times.

Interesting! I wonder if there are any US examples?

The only ones I saw were French, and in very few sleeves. My guess is that this was some promotion that did not last long, and so it was not tried in other countries. Moreover, the US Pathé records started to be sold at a later time compared to the period of these center start French records, so probably such trade-in offer was already forgotten by then.

Maybe it prevented unscrupulous dealers from re-selling trade-in records as new?

It would be cool to find one of the cancelled records.

Evidently the program wasn't entirely transitory; I just received an eBay-purchased Pathé disc with the same notice, but printed on the paper cover rather than applied with a sticker.

That's interesting! I'll search through my Pathé records to see if I find one of these.
