“On This Day in the History of Recorded Sound…”

August 20, 1859: Born: Silas Leachman, prolific pioneer American recording artist and possibly the first commercial recording artist in Chicago, making cylinders for the North American Phonograph Company’s local branch, ca. 1892.

August 20, 1901: Thomas Macdonald was granted a U.S. patent (No.680, 794) for “Combined Graphophone and Motor.” This was the tremendously successful Columbia “Eagle” Graphophone, which sold approximately 150,000 units over its 10-year production life.

August 20, 1969: The last time all four of The Beatles were together in a recording studio.
