I am working on a paper about making records in the "pioneer" period of the early recording industry. (I worked on many records made at RCA from 1997 - 2009 and Island Def Jam from 2009 - 2012.)
I came across this thread in my research and yes, much of acoustic recording was done via trial-and-error. I found this piece by an early "recorder" (or "recordist) as well: https://www.recordingpioneers.com/docs/ ... eobald.pdf.
Side note: I cannot find the original in Talking Machine World. Can anyone else?

That was not published in the New York based "The Talking Machine World," ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Talking_Machine_World ) but in "The Talking Machine News & Side Lines" which was a British trade publication--also early 20th century--which focused on the gramophone and record industry.
