New York Phonograph Company

Post by Banjo »

A big hello to all out there. I just joined up here after the purchase of my first "Talking machine". I found it locally on craigslist.
It is labeled as the "Angelograph" built by the New York Phonograph Company in Elmira N.Y. That is the only identifying mark on it. It looks very similar to other upright cabinet models I've seen on here, and I'm betting it was built with available standard mechanicals and specifications, in a locally finished cabinet. It's nicely done but not exceptional, and unfortunately, amateurly refinished, I believe with polyurethane :o
I just wondered if any of you have heard of this company, or if it was one of a thousand similar local small businesses of the day. I also wondered where I would look to try and date it. I'm guessing numbers on the motor or some such.
Thanks for any help. I hope to expand my collection a little in the future. It takes in all sorts of early 20th century machines, from the phonograph, to a Singer sewing machine, to a gas-powered Maytag washer, to an Underwood No.5 Typewriter, to a Triumph TR2 sportscar.... I just enjoy old mechanical things and old music too ,so this is a perfect fit. I'm keeping an eye open for an Edison cylinder machine when I find one for the right price :D .
I'll try to get pictures this weekend and post them.
Itried to post this before I registered, so if it gets OKed and double posted I apologize.

Welcome and congratulations. I saw one of those many years ago, it was a fairly standard upright but as I'm from central NY (Norwich) it's always nice to see a regional machine. I've seen machines from Rome NY, Sidney, Pulaski- the Charmophone was made there. Some may have had locally made cabinets but you could also order complete machines from factories in Michigan with the name of your choice. Your best source of information would be a local newspaper file.

Thank you estott. I'm actually just outside of Elmira, so that's what caught my eye to this unit. Looking at the construction of this player, and others I've seen since starting to learn about these machines, I'm betting your right about it being ordered from a supplier with a store decal. That would make sense. It's a little disappointing in that aspect, but I am enjoying it immensely learning about it and playing the old records. I'm sure I'll wind-up (no pun intended)having one or two more of these before all is said and done.
My in-laws handed me an album with about 10 78s in it today! so now I have some new-old listening. Good stuff too.
I am lucky that this player came with the needle cups full of new needles, and a little vintage tin box of "Victrola talking machine extra loud needles" I also have a paper pack of Decca needles that was in the old singer sewing machine I have. So, for needles, I'm set for a good long time.
an interesting accessory this player has is an arm stamped the "Repeat-o-graph" It spans across the record to the center pin, and has 2 adjustable fingers to be able to set the tone arm to only play a portion of a record, and be able to reset it back to the same starting point. I guess that would be useful if you were trying to learn a portion of a song, or a dance step. either way it's an interesting piece. Pics soon. haven't had a chance yet.
