Well. it is now on ebay

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VICTOR-TALKING- ... 3f16848124

The seller has added a close up picture of the data plate. Still a really bad picture (the guy needs a new camera), but clear enough to see it's an E...although the seller is still calling a C.

The E, when fitted with a rear mount, was the Victor II, but this machine appears to be fitted with a back bracket and tone arm form a later II. The E style two used a very tine arm. The arm on thins machine also appears to bee too long, placing the needle point well past the spindle, but we cannot be certain of this because of the angle from which the photo was taken, which angle could not have been better chosen to conceal this defect, if such existed.

Wasn't a rear mount Vic E called a "Victor the Second" in advertising print? Has anyone seen the earlier Vic E style cabinet and motor with a "Vic II" ID tag? I've always thought the "Vic II" ID tag came with the change in motor and cabinet. Jerry Blais

Yes. The rear mount (or earlier Rigid Arm) Royal was advertised as Victor the First, the Monarch Junior (labeled "E") Victor the Second, The Monarch was Victor the Third, the Monarch Special was Victor the Fourth, and the De Luxe was Victor the Fifth.

Upon re-reading my post I see that my language was, well, UNCLEAR at best!

I did not mean to suggest that any of these machines ever bore the numerical designation tags, only that they EVOLVED into the numbered machines with which we are so familiar, and were referred to as such in company literature.
